Antique Halloween Pulp Jack O' Lantern FN Burt 1920s / 1930s ~ Rare Vintage Pumpkin Goblin
This hard to find vintage Halloween pulp piece is one of our favorites due to it's uniqueness, ambiguity and delightfully murky provenance. Due to it's texture, design, overall style and imprinted lettering on the bottom, this item was almost certainly made by F.N. Burt of Buffalo New York. However, dating the item, as well as clarifying what exactly it is (or was supposed to be) is challenging. We've seen it listed as being manufactured in the 1930s, which would align with other similar confirmed FN Burt pieces, but we've also seen store images with this piece in shop windows in the mid-1920s. Seeing confirmed photos of this piece in the 1920s, coupled with the item lacking the standard F.N. Burt Buffalo N.Y. marking on bottom makes us think this is an earlier F.N. Halloween piece produced in the mid-1920s. With regards to what exactly it is, we believe it is either a peculiar (in the best way!) interpretation of a jack-o'-lantern or a goblin, but we have also seen it referenced as a Halloween boar, pig and creature/monster.
This charmingly creepy antique has great coloring and it's original face insert (the insert has small tears and holes)! The irregular/asymmetrical top rim of the piece seems to have been standard with these and is not a defect (the top isn't ripped or torn, it was made that way based on the handful of other samples we seen). This particular sample does have a small circular hole cut in the bottom that all but one of these that we've ever seen has had - it was almost certainly done either during production or as soon as the customer got it home, so they could put a candle through the bottom. Additionally, there is no wire handle. On the Bottom are the words "FIRE PROOFED" as well as "DRAKE PROGRESS PATENTED". In vintage condition with one scratch/ding on the back (may also include rips/tears, scuffs, blemishes, paint loss, candle wax, etc.). These are getting increasingly more difficult to find in any condition and this piece is sure to be a Spooktacular focal point in almost any vintage or antique Halloween collection!
